Wild Night Out at YHA Windermere

Sitting above the longest and most iconic lake in the Lake District, YHA Windermere is the perfect base for exploring this famous National Park.

There will be an evening walk by local guides up to Cathedral Quarry, exploring pitch black mineshafts and quarry pit that has featured in films and outdoor documentaries. The Cathedral quarries are a small network of inter-linked quarries above Little Langdale. The Cathedral quarry cave system is best known for its main chamber, which stands at forty feet in height and illuminated by two windows off the main quarry itself. The main entrance into Cathedral quarry will lead you to the dramatic 40-foot-high chamber known as the cathedral which gives the site its name. It will also giving you a glimpse into the industrial past of the area and a view of how nature has reclaimed the site since its closure.

Speaking in the evening at the Windermere Wild Night Out Camp-Out will be Maddie Cope and Ethan Walker.

Maddy started climbing during sixth form, by sheer coincidence: a guy she started to chatting to, in one of Warrington's excellent night clubs, told her about an epic experience he'd had in the Alps, involving a helicopter rescue. To Maddy this sounded much more adventurous than dancing to cheesy music and drinking alcopops. Somehow she managed to persuade him to take her to the local climbing wall, and from there she was hooked. She has made a name for herself on hard and bold trad climbing. Among her notable ascents, she has made repeats of Dave Birkett's Once Upon a Time in the South West (E9 6c) and Beat Kammerlander's Prinzip Hoffnung (E9/10) in Austria. She has also climbed several desperately hard sport routes up to 8c and in early 2019 climbed Mind Control (8c) at Oliana, Spain.

Ethan is a Peak District based climber with a whole host of hard ascents to his name, highlights including Kaabah 8c+, the famous hard grit route Meshuga, E9 6c and Belly of the Beast V14. Ethan has been climbing for close to 25 years, having first started being just 4 years old when his Dad introduced him to the sport. His Dad still remains one of his main climbing partners to this day.
