Teammates Needed to Cross Iceland by Packraft

Join a TeamBelinda KirkComment

I’m organising an expedition to cross Iceland by pack raft this summer. The team will start in Akureyri and trek approximately 140km until the headwaters of the Thjorsa river are reached. Here the team will split with some of the team continuing south to Viki on foot, and the remainder of the team paddling the length of the Thjorsa river south west to the coast. For both teams we are expecting the journey to take about 2.5 weeks.

About Me

I’m a British guy called Neil in my late 20s. Although a keen white water kayaker, having paddled rivers around the world up to grade 5 in difficulty, I also have a wide range of expedition experience in caving, mountaineering and trekking. Recently I have organised and participated in expeditions that have successfully crossed deserts by foot in Israel, discovered new cave passages in Austria and circumnavigated Sardinia by sea kayak.

The Team

I currently have four people on board for the expedition and are looking for two more (one pack rafter and one trekker) to join the team. I’m looking for enthusiastic and positive individuals with the following skills:

  • A good level of fitness, able to trek with a heavy rucksack for up to 8 hours a day.

  • Willingness to wild camp for an extended period.

  • Believer in the ‘leave no trace’ ethic.

  • Confident grade 3 kayaker (only required if pack rafting).

Logistics

Expedition Dates: 31t May 2017 – 16th June 2017.

Expedition Cost: Circa £450 (to cover flights & baggage, food, in-country transport & camping accommodation) + pack raft rental if required of approximately £250.
