On Saturday 4th October 2025, my husband Mike and I will set out from South Haven Point, Dorset, to begin a slow, purposeful walk around the entire coastline of mainland Great Britain.
We’ll walk anticlockwise for around two years, taking no ferries and only stepping onto islands linked by a bridge or causeway. Carrying everything we need, we’ll share stories along the way and explore what it means to grow older adventurously.
This journey is called HeadRightOut: One Coast Any Age, rooted in our belief that adventure shouldn’t stop with age — it should grow with it.
I’m proud to be an AdventureMind ambassador, living its message every day: adventure is a powerful tool for mental health and resilience. Mike will be 73 when we set off, walking with two new hips. I’ll be 54, continuing my own resilience journey. Together, we’re also raising funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, our local emergency charity.
How the Explorers Connect community can help? We’d love to connect with you in a few key ways:
Urban Hosting: a patch of garden in cities like London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff or Newcastle, where camping wild isn’t possible.
Book Us to Speak: we’d love to give talks at libraries, bookshops, schools, outdoor clubs, or community halls. A lift to and from the coast would help enormously.
Web Map Wizardry: someone who can help us set up a simple, easy-to-update progress map for our website.
Scottish Highlands Knowledge: advice on how close we can keep to the sea on the west coast, or whether it’s long tarmac sections. We expect to reach this area in late 2026 / early 2027.
Media Connections: introductions to journalists or outlets who could help spread the word about our walk, supporting both AdventureMind and DS Air Ambulance.
What we’ll share
This journey won’t be sugar-coated. We’ll share the tough days as much as the joyful ones, through writing, social media, podcasting and live updates. I published my first memoir 630 Miles Braver earlier this year, and plan to write another book about this experience when we return.
