Expedition Norway

CommunityBelinda KirkComment

Expedition Norway is an idea created by myself, Ed Shields, and my colleague Stephen Smith. We aim to cross from the North coast of Norway to the South coast.

The first section of our journey will be on bikes, covering about 300km and taking us to the base of Northern Europe's highest mountain Galdhopiggen. We will then climb this mountain and continue on foot over the glaciers and mountains for 350km. This will also include retracing the route that Amundsen took in 1896 when he was training for his future polar expeditions. For the third section we will take to the water on either pack rafts or kayaks (TBC) and paddle 300km to the South coast. So why? We have both wanted to take part in a multi activity expedition for a long time and especially one that hasn't been done before. It had to be challenging but also achievable so that we would test ourselves physically and mentally but still be able to inspire and plant ideas for other people to take their own unique challenges. Norway offered everything in one country. It has huge fjords, high mountain peaks, glaciers, great roads for cycling on and is the home of several famous adventurers, (Amundsen and Nansen to name a couple).

It also has the benefit of not being a million miles away from the UK so that air fares and logistics aren't going to make our lives harder. When? We've yet to confirm dates as it'll be dependent on sponsorship and logistics, but will either be early or late Summer. Getting involved: We're currently entered into a competition run by Kukri to win an 'adventure scholarship' worth up to 20,000, that would help make this trip possible.

We've submitted a 2 minute video entry that we need as may votes as possible for. Voting doesn't mean a win, that will be determined by a panel of judges after being shortlisted and submitting proposals and giving a presentation. The more votes the better though! So please follow our FB link and then follow the links to the voting page and vote for Expedition Norway! Whether we get the scholarship or not we will be looking for assistance in the form of sponsorship, equipment, logistical help and any other advice.

So if anyone can assist please send a message to our FB page, Twitter account or email: FB: https://www.facebook.com/ExpedNorway Twitter: @ExpedNorway Email: expednorway@gmail.com
