Kayaking Solo Around Ireland

CommunityBelinda KirkComment

On June 4th Mike Jones departed his home town of Cobh, Co. cork and is attempting to Sea Kayak Solo Around Ireland. To meet this target he will have to cover an average of 30miles per day spending up to 12 hours in his canoe battling strong currents and gusting winds. Mike will carry all of the equipment needed for the entire journey including food for up to 10 days at a time. Resupplying with food and water as required and will hopefully meet up with some friends to get a hot shower and bed for the night from time to time. Each evening Mike will make landfall and set up camp and spend the night under canvas before rising with the sun. Each day will require the consumption of over 5,000 calories. The kayak for this amazing journey is a Sipre Murano Evo, this type of canoe is quick, stable and capable of carrying all the necessary kit and equipment for the journey. When not adventuring in some far destination Mike is based in the picturesque town of Killaloe on the river Shannon, Ireland. The skills he has acquired through his years on the water and in the mountains are put to good use as he volunteers with his local Irish Coast Guard Team.
