Wild West Cliff Camping
29th - 30th June 2019
One of our most epic and unforgettable summer nights out is back for 2019! Sleep on a ledge against a vertical cliff face, suspended in mid-air, high above the swirling sea – this is not for the fainthearted...
As with rock climbing and abseiling, although cliff camping may seem dangerous, it is a very safe activity. Your instructors will set everything up and stay within reach the whole time to make sure you’re are safe, happy and comfortable.
Overnight you’ll be sleeping on portaledges, which were invented to provide climbers with something flat to sleep on while they’re climbing multi-day, vertical routes up big walls. Imagine a hammock large enough to accommodate a few people made of super strong textiles - they’re surprisingly comfortable and relaxing, allowing you to sleep in places you wouldn’t otherwise expect to be able to. You’ll be on the Anglesey coast in northwest Wales, which frequently provides much warmer and drier conditions than anywhere else in the UK. If the weather does turn, the portaledges have windproof and waterproof covers so it will be just like being in a tent - you’ll stay warm and dry all night.
Recommended by: Explorers Connect’s previous Adventure Coordinator Alex, who went on this adventure last year and said that it’s one of the best things she’s ever done! Check out her blog about her experience here.
Day 1 (Saturday): In the afternoon, you'll head down in time to catch a (hopefully!) glorious western sunset. At the cliff edge you’ll get attached to a rope and abseil a short distance down the cliff to the portaledge that may seem a bit scary at first, but once you’re down you’ll quickly become accustomed to the portaledge and realise how safe it is. As you get comfortable and watch the sun go down you’ll enjoy a hearty hot meal, and while the stars come out you’ll wrap your hands round a mug of hot chocolate or some warming wine. If you need to go to the toilet during the night it’s not a problem - the instructors will help you go up and back down.
Day 2 (Sunday): In the morning, you’ll leave your sleeping bags for some hot coffee and breakfast, with a chance to stretch and admire the beautiful morning views around you before heading back up to solid ground.
No previous climbing experience is needed, though a good head for heights is obviously an advantage.
One night cliff camping on a portaledge with all technical equipment included, and accompanied by experienced instructors at all times
A hot dinner to eat in the evening as you watch the sun set
Breakfast the next morning, ready when you wake up
All you need to bring is some warm clothes, a sleeping bag, a camera for those cliff-side selfies, and an appetite for adventure
No further activities are included on the days either side of the cliff camping, however there is plenty to do in the area. We will provide further info and directions on how to get there in the joining instructions once you book.
