Tree Climbing and Canopy Camping
Saturday 14th- Sunday 15th July 2018
Just 20 minutes drive from Reading, you'll learn to tree climb in beautiful beech woodland on a private estate, enjoy a home-cooked dinner round the campfire and spend the night in a special tent high up in the tree canopy... this is a unique adventure exclusive to EC that you won't want to miss!
Tree climbing has been around since the late 19th century - it used to just be for professional arborists but now more and more people want to learn the art of ascending and moving around in the treetops. On this bespoke adventure, in a small group of 8 you'll get private tuition on how to enter a tree’s canopy using ropes, knots and karabiners, with plenty of time to practise your climbing technique and ways of moving around in the canopy... If you're feeling brave you can take a thrilling ride on the zip wire back down to the ground!
On top of all of that, on Saturday night after enjoying a hearty meal cooked on the campfire you'll climb back up the tree to your specially constructed tent hammock to spend an unforgettable night looking out over the estate and falling asleep in the peaceful treetop - we'll have the woodland all to ourselves!
EC adventures are informal, friendly and great fun! They're made up of singles, couples and small sets of friends with ages typically ranging from mid 20s to mid 40s but anyone over 18 years old and young at heart is welcome. Whether it's your first time exploring the outdoors or you're an adventure professional, EC adventures are a great way to meet like-minded people in a safe, welcoming and fun environment.
On Saturday morning you'll arrive on the grounds of the estate, drop off your bag at base camp and meet your instructors under your 'learning tree'. You'll have an introductory session on the concept of tree climbing and getting familiar with the rope and anchor systems that are used. Then you'll spend the morning perfecting your climbing technique and enjoy flying down a zip wire all the way to the ground - once you've had a taste of zip wire action you won't want to stop! After a break for lunch you'll continue climbing, integrated with a lesson on basic double-point tree climbing techniques, which you can test out for the rest of the day under the guidance of the professionals!
In the late afternoon you'll come back to base camp where you'll be welcomed by a roaring fire, and as the sun sets you'll enjoy a hot, freshly-cooked meal surrounded by illuminated treetops. After dinner you'll climb up to your hammock tent in the canopy and watch the stars come out as you settle in for the night. You might even get a chance to use bat monitors to listen to the wildlife in the surrounding woodland as you fall asleep to the peaceful sounds of nature.
On Sunday morning you'll climb back down for a group breakfast around the camp fire. You'll have the choice to either relax around the fire and enjoy the beautiful scenery or hone your technique on another tree-climbing session. Sunday morning is your chance to ask your instructors any final questions and get some one-to-one advice before you finish the course at lunchtime. Perhaps you might want to carry on exploring Ipsden or make your way home to share tales of your overnight treetop adventure!
LOCATION AND FACILITIES
You'll be based on the beautiful Ipsden Estate in Oxfordshire, near Henley and only a short drive from London or Reading. There will be free car parking on site. The facilities at the campsite will be basic but comfortable, including a few mobile compost toilet tents and a covered shower (the water won't be heated but you might enjoy it after a long sweaty day of climbing!).
There will be a number of canopy hammock tents set up in the trees which you will either have to yourself or share between two (if sharing, these will be single gender). The instructors will stay up with you throughout the night so if you do need the toilet and are not confident with getting back down one of the instructors will help you! If you don't fancy sleeping in the tree you can spend the night in a tent on the ground.
The food will be rustic but locally sourced, freshly-cooked and of course delicious! If you have any dietary requirements these can be catered for but please let us know when you book.
