This trip is open to everyone and you don’t have to have any surfing experience at all! We expect the group to be mixed ability – so we’ve organised an optional beginner’s lesson with all surfing equipment and beach transfers included. If you’re a more experienced surfer feel free to bring your own equipment if you have it or if you want to hire it all we can arrange that for you too – bodacious!
You'll arrive into Lisbon airport on Wednesday morning or lunchtime and meet the surfing instructors, who will drive you to the village of Ericeira, around 35 km from Lisbon. Ericeira is internationally recognised as Portugal’s ‘surfing paradise’ and in 2011 became the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe, attracting riders from all over Portugal and beyond because of its amazingly consistent surf. It’s a great place to learn – there are loads of beaches at hand ranging from beginner level to more gnarly for the thrill-seekers. Ericeira town is also a great place to relax on land, offering a wide choice of local cuisines and beachside bars, and because it’s small everything is within walking distance. Once you've settled in there’ll be rest of the day to chill out, explore the town or if even grab some boards and spend a few hours on the surf.
On the first morning your surfing instructors will pick you up and take you to a local beach for a two-hour beginner lesson, where you’ll learn safety procedures in and out of the water and all the basic manoeuvres to control the boards. You can hang on to our kit for the rest of the day, so after breaking for lunch you can go back out on the waves – after all, practise makes perfect! In the evenings you can venture out into Ericeira town together to sample some local cuisine and maybe even a little bit of beach bar hopping. One night you can also share a three-course, home-cooked Portuguese meal together at the hostel!
On the best day for surf, you'll head up north to the town of Peniche to bag a good viewing spot for an action-packed day at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, the penultimate stage of the 2018 World Surf League (WSL) Men’s Championship Tour. You'll see professional surfers doing some rad moves through Peniche’s signature ‘super tube’ waves – previous competitions have seen appearances from John John Florence, Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina, who won the title in 2017. Check out the video on the right for some highlights!
You'll also have two free days – you can have more surf lessons, try out some other watersports, rent a bike and cycle up to the World Surfing Reserve or just walk around Ericeira’s promenades sampling local food and absorbing the culture! On the last day you can all meet up in the afternoon for a late lunch or early dinner together before sharing taxis back to the airport.
Please note that the order of the activities depends on the weather conditions - we'll make sure to pick the best day to go and watch the WSL competition.
If you've never come on an EC Adventure before, they're informal, friendly and great fun. We generally have singles, couples and small sets of friends coming along, from complete beginners to adventure professionals - what we all share is a love for adventure.
