Intermediate Navigation Course in the Peak District
Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th June 2018
On this course you'll be able to develop your navigation skills with experienced and qualified outdoor instructors who will help you become a more competent navigator. We'll be following the syllabus of the Silver National Navigation Award and on successful completion of the weekend, you'll be awarded a certificate for this nationally recognised qualification.
The aims of the National Navigation Award Scheme are simple – to give lovers of the outdoors, whatever their sport, age or fitness, the freedom to explore the paths, trails, hills and mountains of Britain and abroad. Progressing through the scheme will take you from being an absolute map and compass novice right through to becoming an expert navigator. You'll spend two days in the Peak District in a small group of no more than 6 giving you lots of personal practice, the chance to ask questions and really gain confidence in your skills.
The Silver National Navigation Award develops the navigation skills acquired at the bronze level. It adds skills required to navigate to features and places some distance from paths and tracks. It teaches accurate compass work. It will also teach you to select the suitable navigational techniques to cross open country. The course is taught in areas with access to open country and involve periods where you’ll be navigating away from paths and tracks.
The syllabus of the Silver National Navigation Award teaches navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features. Basic map interpretation and compass work is also included. The full syllabus is available to view on the NNAS website.
This course is open to all whether or not you have the bronze award - although having navigation experience will be useful!
You're welcome to arrive at the accommodation any time from Friday afternoon. Look out for your EC host and Instructor, Simon, who will welcome you, allocate your room and let you settle in. We'll spend Friday evening eating locally and getting to know each other whilst discussing the plan for the weekend. After breakfast on Saturday, we'll split into two groups of six and spend some time in the classroom before heading out from the hostel for a full day in the Peak District. On Saturday evening we'll head back into the village for dinner. Sunday will be another full day in the hills before returning to the hostel mid-afternoon for a debrief.
Included in the price is two night's accommodation at YHA Hathersage, an ideal base from which to explore the Peak District, one of the best walking centres in the country. On the edge of the Hope Valley, it enjoys panoramic views of the hills around Kinder and at only 700 metres from the railway station on the Manchester to Sheffield train line, it's easy to get to by public transport.
We'll be sharing the hostel with other guests but will have two small dormitories to ourselves. Food and drink is available on site but there are numerous places to eat and drink in the village just a few minutes walk away.
We've not included food in this weekend but the hostel offers full English and continental breakfasts, packed lunches and a set price evening menu under the YHA Supper Club, where you can share a meal with other people staying at the hostel. You're also welcome to bring all your own food and prepare your own meals using the fully fitted self-catering kitchen.
