Powering the Adventure Revolution

Glastonbury Adventure
Friday 26th - Sunday 28th October 2018

Disappear to the land of the faeries on this weekend as you explore the mythical marvels of this famous town - wind your way up the labyrinth of Glastonbury Tor, follow a trail of historical village sites, and try your hand at some pumpkin carving as the night draws in...

Glastonbury Tor has been a spiritual site since medieval times - excavations of the top of the Tor have revealed the plans of two superimposed churches of St Michael, of which only a 15th-century tower remains standing today. The tower is a beacon that can be seen for miles around and still attracts people from all over the world - offering magnificent views of the Somerset Levels, Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales.

Not only rich in history, Glastonbury Tor is also rich in myth and legend, named a 'magic mountain', 'spiral castle' and a centre for pagan rites and beliefs, which are still very much celebrated today. It is said to be home to Gwyn ap Nudd (Lord of the Underworld and King of the Fairies) and where the faerie folk live... and for us it's a beautiful place to walk, unwind and relax.

On this weekend you also have the chance to visit to the nearby Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve at the heart of the Avalon Marshes (part of Somerset’s Levels and Moors). This magnificent nature reserve with a mix of habitats covers over 500 hectares, and is a superb place to watch all sorts of wildlife. Over 60 different species of birds nest at Shapwick and mammals also thrive there, including otters!

EC adventures are informal, friendly and great fun! They're made up of singles, couples and small sets of friends with ages typically ranging from mid 20s to mid 40s but anyone over 18 years old and young at heart is welcome. Whether it's your first time exploring the outdoors or you're an adventure professional, EC adventures are a great way to meet like-minded people in a safe, welcoming and fun environment.

You'll meet your EC host at the accommodation after 6pm on Friday, who will show you to your room. After you're settled in you can spend the rest of the evening relaxing and getting to know everyone. After breakfast on Saturday, we'll have the whole day to walk and explore the grounds of the Tor and follow the cultural heritage trails of Glastonbury town, after which you'll walk back to the hostel and enjoy a home-cooked meal. If you fancy a crafty evening activity we'll run a pumpkin carving session where you can let your creativity loose!

On Sunday you're free to explore - depending on group preference your host can take you to the pretty Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve for some wildlife spotting, or you may choose to journey further afield into the Mendip Hills or take a tour around Wookey Hole, famous for its cave-aged cheese.

YHA Street is a charming Swiss-style chalet building (the oldest YHA hostel) located about a mile from Street and surrounded by National Trust land with views of the mystical Glastonbury Tor. A former holiday home for workers at the Clarke's shoe factory, this alpine style chalet offers simple accommodation in its own grounds. The hostel sleeps 20 people in rooms of 3, 4 and 6 beds, each with their own washbasins. All bed linen is provided and there are 2 showers and 3 toilets. Parking is available for 20 cars in a public car park, 100m away.

You can download our recommended kit list for walking weekends HERE.  All bed linen is provided so you just need to bring your own towel.
