Learn to Freedive
Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th June 2018
Just ONE place left on this adventure!
Learn the peaceful skills of freediving and how to look for sustainable foods that can be gathered from the sea in this bespoke two-day course on the South Coast - come and try a different kind of summer school!
Freediving is very simply being in and under the water whilst holding your breath. You might have seen the classic photos of world champion freedivers plunging to the darkest depths of the ocean or locals collecting pearls from coral reefs in Asia, but in fact every time you enter the water and hold your breath you are also 'freediving'. On this weekend course, we're giving you the opportunity to learn this skill and then put in to action over two days of (literally) breathtaking experiences!
The one-day AIDA 1* Freediver course is your introduction to freediving. Starting in the safe surroundings of a swimming pool, you'll learn the skill of breath-hold freediving as well as ensuring you know the safety aspects of the sport. On successful completion you will receive a certification card from AIDA which you can then show as proof of experience anywhere in the world and open up the opportunity to continue your education and increase your skill set. As an entry level course it qualifies you to dive within a group with more qualified divers.
On day two you'll head to sea with a master instructor and underwater foraging expert, where you'll discover the vast array of sustainable foods that can be gathered from the foreshore and from under the waves, all using your newly acquired freediving skills. You'll be shown how to look for edible seaweeds, shoreline plants and herbs, molluscs and crustaceans and learn how to find, collect, prepare and use them. There are no spearguns used in this course; it is all about hand gathering using freediving.
EC adventures are informal, friendly and great fun! They're made up of singles, couples and small sets of friends with ages typically ranging from mid 20s to mid 40s but anyone over 18 years old and young at heart is welcome. Whether it's your first time exploring the outdoors or you're an adventure professional, EC adventures are a great way to meet like-minded people in a safe, welcoming and fun environment.
You're welcome to arrive at the accommodation from 2pm on the Friday, get settled in and the rest of the day is yours to explore - you'll be sharing your room with other ECers so this is a great chance to get to know each other.
After breakfast on Saturday morning, you'll make your way to the classroom/kit store just outside Newquay (about a ten minute drive from the town) where you'll meet your instructors and get kitted out for the day. There'll be a short theory session before heading to the pool where you'll spend the first part of the day working towards your AIDA 1* freediving qualification. If the group progress well you may transfer to the sea in the afternoon, and on successful completion of the course at the end of the day you'll get your certificate! In the late afternoon you'll have some free time - you can take a walk on Fistral beach or explore Newquay town before heading out to dinner with your classmates.
On Sunday morning you'll meet your expert sea foraging instructor in the centre of town and head out to your dive site for the day. The weekend will end with a BBQ on the beach to cook up the items you've found whilst foraging (weather-dependent).
Your hostel accommodation is located just off Fore Street right in the heart of Newquay overlooking the beach! With free WiFi throughout the building and an adjoining backpacker bar, everything you need is right on your doorstep.
Accommodation is in 6 bed, ensuite dorms. Bedding is provided but you'll need to bring a towel.
All specialist kit will be provided for you, all you need to bring is swimwear and a towel. For ladies we recommend a one piece - much easier to wear under the wetsuit! If you have your own 5mm hooded wetsuit then you're welcome to bring and wear it for the course.
Snacks and water are provided each day and you're welcome to bring a light lunch but it is better if you can have a good breakfast and then try to avoid eating anything substantial whilst doing the course.
