Everest Base Camp
Friday 3rd - Sunday 19th April 2020
Join this trip of a lifetime in Spring 2020 - 16 days of adventure trekking across stunning landscapes surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the world - and you only need to take 9 days off work.
On this breathtaking trek to Everest Base Camp, you'll follow in the footsteps of climbing legends, including Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
You'll have time to enjoy the friendly local Nepalese culture and hospitality as you make your way across the mountains on this well-known route - exploring remote villages, getting up close to beautiful monasteries, seeing strings of colourful prayer flags and crossing thrilling suspension bridges. In the evenings you'll sit down to enjoy hot meals in cosy teahouses and each day you'll be astounded by the views looking up the slopes of some of the tallest peaks in the world such as Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam.
To get to Everest Base Camp you'll fly to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, then take another plane to the small mountain town of Lukla. When you get to Lukla you'll have a night to prepare before your real adventure begins.
DAY ONE - Friday 3rd April - Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m)
You will be met by the trek leader at the airport you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your accommodation in Kathmandu which will require approx. half an hour’s drive. After check-in at the hotel and a chance to refresh you will be briefed on your trek itinerary.
DAY TWO - Saturday 4th April - Flight to Lukla (elevation 2,840 m) and Trek to Phakding (2,610m)
You will take an early morning flight to Lukla - a scenic flight that only takes around 40 minutes. Lukla itself is a beautiful mountain village. You’ll have a break for tea or coffee and you'll be able to buy bottled water or trekking gear if you still need anything. You will then trek about 4 hours to Phakding with lunch along the way.
DAY THREE - Sunday 5th April - Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
After breakfast, you will start your journey to Namche Bazaar – the Sherpa capital and base for any Everest expedition. You'll cross six suspension bridges over the beautiful Dudhkoshi River. There are plenty of nice small tea shops along the way where you'll stop for some drinks and lunch, and you'll stay overnight in a local teahouse.
DAY FOUR - Monday 6th April - Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
Day four is an acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar, with an optional hike to a beautiful viewpoint where you can see Mount Everest for the first time. Or you can visit the Sherpa museum to get an insight into Sherpa life.
DAY FIVE - Tuesday 7th April - Trek to Phortse Village (3,860m)
In the morning you'll start a relaxed 5-6 hour trek to Phortse - a beautiful farming village in Khumbu Valley. In the evening you'll stay over in Phortse.
DAY SIX - Wednesday 8th April - Trek to Tengboche (3,860m)
You will leave early for this 6 hour hike to the well-known and beautiful Tengboche monastery, and stay overnight in a teahouse. You’ll have the chance to visit the monastery and if you are lucky you can chat with the monks and the Lama.
DAY SEVEN - Thursday 9th April - Trek to Dingboche (4,410m)
You will leave early again for a 6 hour hike to Dingboche, which will be our resting place for two nights. Dingboche is probably one of the highest villages in Nepal, but the local people are still farming vegetables, even at this high altitude.
DAY EIGHT - Friday 10th April - Dingboche (4,410m)
Day eight is another acclimatisation day at Dingboche, from which there is a choice of optional hikes - you can cross over Imja Khola river and climb up to the bottom of Ama Dablam, one of the most remarkable peaks in this area (a steep hike but worth it for the beautiful views!). Another option is a hike to Pokalde Peak from where there is another magnificent view of the mountains in the area.
DAY NINE - Saturday 11th April - Trek to Lobuche (elevation 4,910 m)
You're getting closer to Everest every day now! On today's 6 hour walk you will cross the Thukla pass where we will get even more dramatic mountain views. At the top of the ridge you'll see an array of stones with prayer flags as a monument to the many tragically failed Everest expeditions. We will stay overnight in a lodge or teahouse in Lobuche.
DAY TEN - Sunday 12th April - Trek to Gorakshep / Everest Base Camp (max 5,364m)
Today you will arrive at the world-famous Everest Base Camp. Seven hours steady uphill trek will bring you to the place where all mountaineers get acclimatised for their Everest expeditions. After exploring Base Camp you will descend back to Gorakshep where you will spend your highest night on this trek at 5,194 m.
DAY ELEVEN - Monday 13th April - Kala Pathar / Trek to Pheriche (max 5,550m)
Kala Pathar / Trek to Pheriche. You may well find this to be the real highlight of the trip. You'll wake up early and climb to Kala Pathar to enjoy a beautiful sunrise view behind Everest. After this you will go back to Gorakshep to enjoy breakfast before descending to Pheriche which lies at an elevation of 4,240m.
DAY TWELVE - Tuesday 14th April - Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
On day twelve, you’ll be trekking back to the Namche Bazaar, where you can do some souvenir shopping.
DAY THIRTEEN - Wednesday 15th April - Trek to Phakding (2,610m)
After a good night's sleep you'll slowly trek back to Phakding.
DAY FOURTEEN - Thursday 16th April - Trek to Lukla (2,840m)
This is your final trekking day and you'll be staying overnight in Lukla ready for the return flight back to Kathmandu.
DAYS FIFTEEN TO EIGHTEEN - Friday 17th April - Sunday 19th April - Flight to Kathmandu & departure back to the UK (allow 3 days)
Flights from Lukla might be delayed if the weather is bad so there are a few extra insurance days scheduled in. You’ll either have some extra days to relax, go rafting down a local river, explore Kathmandu city, or you can be transferred straight to the airport (please note you should consider booking your return flight to the UK on Saturday 18th or Sunday 19th April).
The path from Lukla to Everest Base Camp is only about 40 miles long, but you will gain more than 2,400 metres in elevation. For a successful and enjoyable trip, it’s important to be in good physical shape and to move slowly up the path to give your body time to acclimatise to the altitude.
Although you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to trek to Everest Base Camp, to fully enjoy the trip we strongly advise:
A clean bill of health
A good level of fitness
Some experience of hill walking
Basically the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the days of trekking, the less tired you will be, and the faster your body will recover. The best training possible is getting out on the hills, but any exercise will be of benefit and there are lots of free training plans on the internet (for example see a range here).

International personal travel insurance. Please note this is compulsory and it must cover both medical & emergency evacuation with worth of USD 100,000 minimum. A copy of your travel insurance must be provided upon your arrival in Kathmandu.
Visa for entry into Nepal - you can apply in advance or on arrival at the airport (please bring extra passport photos and USD $50 cash)
