Sir David Attenborough, has described it as “one of the most important films of our time”. A Plastic Ocean has changed the way we all think about plastics and has made governments around the world respond. We are honoured to invite Jo Ruxton, the woman who started it all, to join us on Thursday 7th February.

Jo left the BBC Natural History Unit after 12 years working mostly on underwater wildlife films. She wanted to make her own environmental film having been frustrated that the BBC did not pay attention to environmental issues that affected the ocean. She decided on plastic in the oceans as an issue because she considered it to be a solvable problem and one where awareness could play a massive role. She took the idea back to the BBC but was told no-one would be interested in the problem so she established the Plastic Oceans Foundation in 2009 as a UK registered  charity to raise the funds she needed.  As the research unfolded she learned about the threat to human health and was determined that the Foundation would give the film a legacy and now focusses on 3 main areas, Education, Sustainability and Science.

“Jo first spoke at EC in 2012 sharing her message of plastic pollution. Her passion and determination is infectious and inspiring, her film-making beautiful and haunting. I am so incredibly proud for her and so excited to hear more. This is a woman who has truly changed the world. Don’t miss it!” 6.30pm doors open.
