Beginner Navigation Course in the Peak District
Friday 20th - Sunday 22nd April 2018
Once again, we'll be hosting one of our popular navigation training weekends where you'll be able to learn from experienced and qualified outdoor instructors who will help you become a more competent navigator. We'll be following the syllabus of the Bronze National Navigation Award and on successful completion of the weekend, you'll be awarded a certificate for this nationally recognised qualification.
The aims of the National Navigation Award Scheme are simple – to give lovers of the outdoors, whatever their sport, age or fitness, the freedom to explore the paths, trails, hills and mountains of Britain and abroad. Progressing through the scheme will take you from being an absolute map and compass novice right through to becoming an expert navigator. You'll spend two days in the Peak District in a small group of no more than 8 giving you lots of personal practice, the chance to ask questions and really gain confidence in your skills.
The Bronze National Navigation Award is a practical hands-on award. It is aimed at people with little or no navigation experience whether you are new to the outdoors or have been relying on others, guidebooks or easy well-defined routes.
The syllabus of the Bronze National Navigation Award teaches navigation in the countryside using paths tracks and other linear features. Basic map interpretation and compass work is also included. The full syllabus is available to view on the NNAS website.
You're welcome to arrive at the accommodation any time from Friday afternoon. Look out for your EC host and Instructor, Simon, who will welcome you, allocate your room and let you settle in. We'll spend Friday evening eating in the restaurant and relaxing in the bar whilst discussing the plan for the weekend. After breakfast on Saturday, we'll split into two groups of eight and spend some time in the classroom before heading out from the hostel for a full day in the Peak District. We can choose to eat dinner on site or can walk into the village to visit one of the local pubs. Sunday will be another full day in the hills before returning to the hostel mid-afternoon for a debrief.
Included in the price is two night's accommodation at YHA Edale, a grand old country house on the southern flanks of Kinder Scout in the heart of the Peak District. This recently refurbished hostel is one of the highest residences in the Peak District and has a view to match with open access moorland in its back garden! There'll be a choice of two, three or four bedded private rooms however we will be sharing this popular hostel with other guests. A well stocked bar is on offer as well as a selection of hot and cold drinks which are available all day.
We've not included food in this weekend but the hostel offers full English and continental breakfasts, packed lunches and a wide-ranging evening menu or you can prepare your own meals using the large, self-catering kitchen.

Please note that for this course a compass is ESSENTIAL. Map extracts will be provided but if you have your own please bring it along.
