Alternative Lakes Adventure
Friday 24th - Monday 27th August 2018
Escape the crowds this August and stay with us in the highest YHA bunkhouse in the UK in the quieter northern area of the Lake District - on this long bank holiday weekend you'll take in some epic scenery and tick off some awesome alternative hikes!
On this truly remote hiking weekend you'll be away from the usual hustle and bustle of tourists on Scafell Pike, instead exploring a quieter area of the Lake District and staying at a bunkhouse nestled in the middle of a spectacular valley between the mighty Blencathra peak and Skiddaw massif. To the east, Blencathra is one of the Lake District’s most famous and dramatic mountains standing at 868 metres tall - it was described by famous fellwalker Alfred Wainwright as ‘one of the grandest objects in Lakeland’. There are 12 different routes of ascent, from an easy hike via Blease Fell to an adrenaline-fuelled scramble up Sharp Edge. From the summit you’ll discover glorious views over the surrounding fells, like the vale of Keswick and the Helvellyn range.
To the west, the Skiddaw massif stands over the town of Keswick and can be seen from much of the Lake District. The slate from the mountain range was used in many of the buildings around Keswick, as well as being used in a very interesting xylophone-like instrument known as the "Musical Stones of Skiddaw". The main way up to Skiddaw's summit is from the village of Keswick, but we'll hike a more scenic route right from our door looking back at some beautiful fells and vales.
EC adventures are informal, friendly and great fun! They're made up of singles, couples and small sets of friends with ages typically ranging from mid 20s to mid 40s but anyone over 18 years old and young at heart is welcome. Whether it's your first time exploring the outdoors or you're an adventure professional, EC adventures are a great way to meet like-minded people in a safe, welcoming and fun environment.
You'll meet your EC hosts at the Fell car park around 6pm on Friday, and you'll all walk the three miles down the track to the bunkhouse together. It's an easy, good-quality track which contours along the east side of the Glenderaterra valley with great views to the south. After you're settled in you can spend the rest of the evening relaxing round the log fire and getting to know everyone.
On Saturday after breakfast we'll head right out from the door towards Blencathra - we'll do one of the classic circular ridge walks or an alternative path depending on group preference. The views will be stunning - you'll see wild valleys, glacial corries and cross beautiful fells. In the evening you'll be back at the bunkhouse for a delicious hot dinner - sunset will be around 8pm so you could take an evening stroll and watch the stars come out.
On Sunday you'll be out for another full day, this time walking out to the west towards the Skiddaw massif. The ascent route will be decided nearer the time but again you'll get incredible views as you walk along the mountain range with views for miles. You'll come back to the hostel for another hot meal, and if you want to make the most of your last night in this beautiful remote location you can take another sunset walk, or you might just want to play games round the log fire and relax...
Monday is free adventure time - you can either make your way home or if you want to explore for a bit longer in the Lakes we can give you lots of advice on other hikes if you're keen to bag some more peaks before you go!
We'll be staying at Skiddaw House, one of the most remote and highest YHA bunkhouses in the UK... It's three miles from the car park but it's an easy, well-graveled path and a stunning walk in.
Solar panels provide light and hot water, while wood-burning stoves provide the heating. There is no mains electricity, phone signal, TV or internet to distract from the surrounding wilderness, but the building has recently been insulated with sheep fleece creating a cosy atmosphere. We'll have the whole bunkhouse to ourselves, which has 22 bunk beds spread over 4 rooms. All bedding is provided but you'll need to bring a towel.
