Inspiring Girls Expeditions is currently accepting applications from girls worldwide for their free wilderness expedition science program, Girls on Ice! This year, the organization is running three different 12-day expeditions, two in Alaska and one in Washington state. For the first time, they are also offering a 9-day expedition in the Swiss Alps. On the trip, a small team of girls will spend 12 days exploring and learning about mountain glaciers and the alpine landscape through scientific field studies with professional glaciologists, ecologists, mountain guides, and artists.
The program, offered in partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is free of cost and open to girls who are 16 or 17 years old on June 1, 2017. Two of the US expeditions are open to all girls worldwide -- Girls on Ice Cascades, which is focused on exploring an active volcano, Mount Baker, in Washington state and Girls in Icy Fjords, which will explore the Bear Glacier and the surrounding marine environment in Alaska by foot and kayak. The second Alaska trip, which involves exploring the Gulkana Glacier and the alpine landscape gives preference to girls from Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, the Yukon, or California. The Girls on Ice Switzerland expedition, which is open to girls between 15 and 18 years old, requires German fluency. No prior technical experience or specialized skills are required of participants.
All Girls on Ice programs are tuition free; participants provide transportation to the program site, but Girls on Ice provides as much financial assistance for travel as they can to ensure that every girl can go regardless of economic situation. They also provide all technical equipment and clothing needed for the expedition. The deadline to apply for this unique program is January 31.
