Navigation and Skills Course 31 Mar - 2 Apr
UPDATE: This date is SOLD OUT. To be added to the waiting list or to express interest in another date enter your email below
A two day course designed to help you improve your independent hiking skills and enable you to confidently and safely plan your own adventures in the hills. Learn from experienced instructors in small groups.
The course is suitable for anyone who enjoys hiking in remote areas but would like to feel more confident planning adventures on their own or with friends. Tuition will be in small groups and arranged by experience level so no experience is necessary. You’ll be out in the hills for much of the weekend learning practical skills.
Over the course of the weekend we will cover topics such as:
- Clothing and Kit - what to take, how to pack it and tips on how to use it
- Route planning - how to estimate timings and understand terrain
- Navigation Skills - how to use a map / compass and night navigation
- Hiking Skills - making it easier and more fun eg pace, movement skills on steep terrain etc
- Weather - how to read the weather reports and impact on your planning
- Safety - how to assess and avoid hazards and deal with emergencies
- Environmental Awareness - best practices on how to leave no trace
- Introduction to outdoor first aid
There will be the opportunity to award National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze Awards to participants after the course to those that meet the criteria. There is also the possibility to award NNAS Silver Awards but this is dependent on the level of skill at the start and the ability of the group as a whole.
You’ll spend the weekend walking in the Brecon Beacons with like-minded people. In the past we have found that the course provides you with not only the skills, but also new contacts who you can go on adventures with.
Our superb location means we’ll have the spectacular scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park on our doorstep. We’ll be staying in cosy and well equipped group accommodation, just minutes from the village pub. Accommodation, most meals and instruction are all included.
If you are coming by train, the nearest station is Abergavenny, which is around 10 miles away. If you arrive by 18:50 there is a direct bus from very near the station to our accommodation.
